Topic: High School Robotics: Building People with Robots
Yoji Shimizu is a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and Director of the MD/PhD Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School. His interest in STEM education extends to high school through his involvement as a volunteer and mentor with FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), an extracurricular mentor-based program that helps young people develop the skills, confidence and resilience to become science and technology leaders. Minnesota has one of the highest number of FRC teams per capita in the country. Dr. Shimizu and student leaders from FRC Team 2129, Ultraviolet, from Minneapolis Southwest High School, and FRC Team 1816, "The Green Machine", from Edina High School will discuss the FRC program and its impact. Students from two teams (Edina and Minneapolis Southwest) will be joining me.

During an international service trip while fulfilling an Edina Global Scholar requirement these four students were touched by the needs of a Zimbabwe orphanage. Recently they presented our members with an opportunity to share in helping the orphanage retain funding for many much-needed items. You can view their presentation and funding requests HERE. The goal is $15,500 and contributions can be made at the via the following code.
