Community Service (Projects) Director Kenny Smith and
Community Service (Local Funding) Co-Directors Brandon Azbill and Paul Peterson

Rotary clubs determine top priorities for service projects by first learning about a community's needs and assets, and then developing a response that addresses them. The Rotary Club of Edina’s Service Projects Committee organizes and oversees many programs in our community and the metro area. During the year we hold work with the Edina Morningside Rotary Club to put together food baskets at Thanksgiving; provide volunteers to Feed My Starving children; and organize Rotary initiatives to provide youth with leadership opportunities, including weekend retreats to Camp Enterprise and Camp RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). Our Service Projects Committee also organizes a number of projects directly benefiting the youth of the community. The committee also invites Edina High School seniors to participate in weekly Rotary meetings as guest speakers, and sponsors annual scholarships to two Edina High School seniors.

Director Kenny Smith oversees all of these activities and the committees. If you are interested in joining one of these committees, please contact either Kenny, who will connect you with the chair of the committee.

The Committee also provides grants for local, regional, state and national projects. Co-Directors Brandon Azbill and Paul Peterson oversee the local funding arm of the Club through the Service Projects Funding Committee. Access the grant request form by clicking on "Local Grant Request Form" under "Downloads" to the left.

The Service Projects Funding Committee responds to the needs and grant requests of the local community. Our areas of service include Edina and its contiguous communities, (Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Richfield and south Minneapolis). The Committee also provides grants for regional, state and national projects. Our service funding vision framework is to create partnerships with other organizations and clubs and to increase our participation in sustainable projects as well as funding for smaller grant requests. Our club focuses on funding for tangible items, rather than funding designated for operating expenses.

Contact one of the co-directors for more information on grants. The process involves submitting a request form (click on link to the left, "Local Grant Request Form") which is then assigned to a committee member who visits the organization and makes recommendation to the committee. All grants are approved by the committee and the Edina Rotary Foundation Board of Directors.

The local organizations and programs we have supported are many and varied and include programs focused on such areas as education/literacy, youth, elder care, women's issues, people with disabilities, child abuse, the arts, recreational and hospice along with many others. Organizations receiving recent grants include:

Oasis for Youth Fishing for Life
Cornerstone Edina High School scholarships
Hearts & Hands   Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People
Fraser YMCA Camp Ihduhapi
Inner City Christian Ministries  Better Futures MN
