This year, the Community Service (Projects) Committee began reading Andy & Elmer’s Apple Dumpling Adventure to third-graders in the community. The
program will continue next school year. If all goes well, our club will expand the program to even more third-grade classrooms in Edina!

The book was developed by the Rotary Club of Fairborn, Ohio, and TokoBooks. It is a children’s picture book designed to promote the Four-Way Test. The project is approved by the Rotary International Literacy Resource Group and is included in “Rotary Reads,” a catalog of literacy programs. It has been adopted as an annual literacy project by many clubs throughout the country, including ours.

Cost for a hardcover book is $18. Cost for a paperback is $12.

Former Edina Rotarian Wendy Muhlhauser recently published her own book, Jelly Beans the Cheetah and Hope, set in Tanzania, Africa, where she traveled with members of our club. One of the main characters is a cartoon version of Past District Governor Sandy Schley. In Jelly Beans the Cheetah and Hope, the unlikely pairing of a sad little girl and a captured cheetah discover how much they share in common when they embark on an adventure in friendship. They've both experienced profound loss, but persevere through sharing empathy, kindness, joy, and love. Together they learn about their connection to the human family and to all, which provides for their self-esteem and a feeling of wholeness.

Cost for a hardcover is $20. Paperbacks are not available at this time.
