At its February meeting, the Edina Rotary Foundation Board of Directors approved two more local grants.
Earlier this year, the Foundation awarded nearly $24,000 to eight local organizations. With funding still available, the Foundation gave the Muscular Dystrophy Association $800 for custom water bottles to be distributed at its summer camp for children. Better Futures of Minnesota was given $2,000 for various tools to employ men who desire to turn their lives around. Grants will be presented at upcoming meetings of the Rotary Club of Edina.

The Foundation Board also discussed future signature projects. Each year, the Foundation selects a project that benefits the community and raises Rotary’s public image. Previous signature projects include community rooms at the Southdale YMCA, Erik’s Retreat and 66 West; Edina Veterans Memorial; triage desk in the Carl N. Platou Emergency Center at Fairview Southdale Hospital; and clock at Centennial Lakes Park, given in honor of the City’s quasquicentennial. This year’s signature projects are a tree-planting project on Edina Public School grounds and an installation of musical instruments at Rosland Park.
Treasurer Josh Sprague proposed a $100,000 four-year project done in conjunction with the Edina Education Fund for Edina Public Schools. The project would include creating a curriculum incorporating Rotary principles and case studies across different subject matter at Edina High School. It would also include a Rotary-branded space or meeting room and technology equipment for teleconferencing with other clubs and classrooms around the world.
The Board directed Sprague to work with the Community Service – Local Funding Committee and future Club presidents to determine interest from them and the general membership. It was also suggested that additional ideas be gathered from members.
