It was Prospective Member Day at the April 12 Rotary Club of Edina meeting. All members were encouraged to bring a guest to check out the club and Rotary. And members and guests alike were in for a treat!
The program speakers were the St. Paul Winter Carnival Royal Family. On their first visit to our club, they did not disappoint! Singing, knighting and storytelling were just some of the highlights.
Wayne and Dana Harmon were celebrated as Major Donors for their generosity to The Rotary Foundation. Dan Hallberg bestowed the honor.
New member Scott Blake was officially inducted into the club. And Kelly Anderson gave her Classification Talk.

We had an enjoyable meeting today schmoozing with the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Royal Family! This was Prospective Member Day with many guests attending. They included:

Tim Murphy lead the invocation. Shortly after, Scott Blake was inducted as an official member of our club by Brad Hepp, accompanied by Scott's sponsor, Greg Yoch. Kelly Anderson provided a nice Classification Talk, sharing her background about her HR outsourcing career along with information on her family.
Dan Hallberg then acknowledged Wayne and Dana Harmon for their tremendous Major Donor contributions to The Rotary Foundation. Steve Buettner introduced Isabelle “Belle” Marty and Aaron Butwinick from Edina High School. They are both seniors at EHS are active in swimming and the arts at EHS.

Mary Younggren then introduced the St. Paul Winter Carnival’s Royal Court and the party started! This was their first visit to our club. We enjoyed hearing the history of the Winter Carnival. It’s the oldest festival in the United States, dating back to 1885. Back then, St. Paul was one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. A group of important people then visited St. Paul and concluded it was “unfit for human habitation." A collection of people from St. Paul decided to do something about this bad rap and started the festival. The members of the Royal Court visiting our meeting included the Northwind Prince, Eastwind Princess, Cowgirl Princess, Klondike Kate, King Boreas Rex, Queen of Snows and the Prime Minister.
The Queen of Snows shared with us why she is the Queen and her passion for humanitarian relief. The King explained the mission of the Royal Court and how they create awareness for the disadvantaged. This past carnival they had truck-loads of clothing brought in for people in need to stay warm and enjoy winter through an organization called “Neighbors." The missions of the Royal Court and Rotary seem to be similar.Klondike Kate then sang “Old St. Paul” and the room was abuzz. The Royal Court then brought up member Gordy Lewis and he was knighted by King Boreas Rex for his countless “angel flights,” which are free flights for those in need. The meeting concluded with Q&A. An interesting comment came from the King when he said this year’s medallion was moved by a snow plow and it took much more digging to find it. All in all a very enjoyable meeting.
