It was the annual Vocational Ethics Day meeting last Thursday, April 26. All Area 3 Rotary clubs—Bloomington, Eden Prairie AM, Eden Prairie Noon, Edina, Edina Morningside, Richfield and South Metro Minneapolis Evenings—gathered at the Edina Country Club to hear keynote speaker Nancy Dahl. Students from area high schools were also invited to attend.

Rotarians, students and guests heard from Dahl about "My Decisions Matter," and also heard from Sam Thompson about Camp Enterprise, EMRC member Tom Gump about the District Conference, and Youth Exchange student Paco Tebar-Gomez about the Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Dan Hallberg, along with a committee of members from Area 3 clubs, organize the meeting each year.

“My Decisions Matter” was the theme of Nancy Dahl’s conversation with the Rotarians from the Area 3 clubs and students from Edina, Bloomington  Kennedy, Bloomington Jefferson, Eden Prairie and Richfield high schools.

We decide what type of a leader or mentor we are going to be. How will we show up? What will our mentee or employees say about us? Are we “for sale?" Today’s world is fact paced and complex. We need to slow it down so we can determine fact from fiction. This way we can stand out.

Begin by finding your core values. Do the work and find your values. Look for your inside story and outside story. We all have them. With these established we can begin to show up.

Nancy is not a big fan of a balanced life but rather focuses on an integrative life. Life is not a straight horizontal line.  It has its ups and downs. So plan for these downs or failures. Learn how to handle adversities. Are you ready?

Learning  will lead to success. It will give you knowledge, confidence and commitment to handle adversity. Here are four questions that will help you:

  • What makes you proud?
  • What did you learn?
  • What could I optimize?
  • What do I take with me?
Then you can set your boundaries.

One of the dangerous words for a good leader is “just." If I had just done this or just done that. A leader must line up what he or she says and does. So drive your own bus!

Navigate yourself, celebrate your forward progress, celebrate who  you are. Lead your life with INTENTION...be you!
