The guest speaker at the meeting, Arlene Vernon,  informed us about sexual harassment within the workplace—#metoo—an international movement against sexual harassment and assault.

We, as business owners, leaders, and managers need to be very conscious of the issues within our organizational culture.

Therefore we really need to step into our organizational culture from the employee’s mind. We need to match our organizational culture to our intent. This includes zero tolerance of harassing, bullying and other uncivil behavior of coworkers, management, clients, vendors and volunteers.

What is sexual harassment?
Arlene explained it is conduct that involves unwelcome and unsolicited sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, or other undesired verbal, visual or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Especially if submission to such conduct is a condition of employment or if rejection of this conduct is used as the basis for employment or other personnel decisions. Such conduct has the effect of unreasonably interfering with the recipients work performance or creating a hostile environment.

Where are we/you in the harassment spectrum?

  • Solutions start at the top.
  • Need a harassment policy, written and included in the employee handbook.
  • Need to discuss at employee orientation.
  • Need to train your trainers and employees.
  • Consistently implement and investigation process.
  • Take appropriate timely action.
  • Check for retaliation.
  • Follow up and observe.
She implored us to look deep within your organization—what does your mirror say? Observe, assess and act!
