March 26, 2019 Barker: Better TogetherToday was a joint meeting with the Edina Morningside club. This meeting was a chance to gather together and remind our membership of the fun we have and good we do together. Our Mayor Jim also gave an encouraging presentation of the state of our community for the year 2019, where we are today and what is coming in future.
Chartered by our Noon Club on October 3rd, 1989. There have been 2 Rotary Clubs in Edina now for 29 years. The Morningside Club is prospering and now has 88 members. Together we participate in many wonderful programs. To encourage yourself and others that you know to participate, I remind you of a few here. Please share this list of special opportunities with all of your friends and neighbors.Camp RYLA: This is coming up very soon, and it is free to students attending. It happens April 12 to 16. RYLA is leadership training weekend retreat for high school students designed to enhance leadership skills, citizenship and personal growth. Our club has funds put aside to sponsor a group of students to attend this very special weekend. Please spread the word especially to families you know with youth in high school. Andre’ Brewer is in charge of this effort for our club, please contact Andre Brewer with potential students or questions.
Vocational Ethics Day: Also just around the corner, Thursday Apr 18th 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Edina Country Club. Please invite guests and encourage high school students to attend. We have a very special speaker this year with a presentation titled Fraud and Consequences. Jerome Mayne will share his personal journey from CEO, father of two young boys, living in a quaint neighborhood, to a whirlwind of FBI investigations, federal court, and finally prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering. North Star Youth Exchange: We have all met Marina and Maya now, two very dear and wonderful young ladies. We have 2 more students, One from Chile and one from India in line to attend Edina High School in the 2019/2020 school year. We need Host families. This is a very special experience, just ask Tom and Catherine Gump. I know we all look forward to a return visit from Paco the Spanish soccer star. Remember this program also sends students from here to foreign lands. We currently have 3 outbound students. Maggie Hogan in Belgium, Laura Schroeder in Brazil and Masha Feldman in Australia. Again, please tell your friends, neighbors and high school youth that you know in the community about the opportunity to be a host family and for an Edina young person to spend a school year abroad.
