Last Thursday, we welcomed Erick Garcia Luna, regional outreach director at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. With a deep understanding of economics and political science, Erick provided insights into several key aspects of the economy in the Fed's Ninth District. Here are a few highlights he shared with our members:
- Economic growth remains fairly resilient. Both the U.S. and Minnesota economies have continued to grow, although the pace varies considerably across different parts of the economy.
The Fed is still balancing its two major goals: price stability and maximum employment. Interest-rate policy remains the primary tool for managing inflation while trying not to unnecessarily weaken economic activity and employment.
- Inflation has come down substantially from its post-pandemic peak, but it hasn’t disappeared. The PCE inflation charts show a major decline from the 2021–22 surge, with some more recent upward pressure and different categories continuing to contribute to inflation.
- The labor market has cooled from its exceptionally tight post-pandemic period. Unemployment has moved up from its lows, employment growth has slowed, and the labor-force participation data suggest the labor market is becoming more balanced rather than collapsing.
Minnesota broadly follows the national economic picture, but its industry mix matters. The GDP slides show that different sectors are contributing positively and negatively to growth in Minnesota versus the country overall, so the state economy doesn’t move in perfect lockstep with national trends.
