The Rotary Club of Edina is collecting sewing and knitting supplies to create a sewing center in Uganda near one of the largest refugee camps in the world. Donations can be dropped off at the Edina Chamber of Commerce, 3300 Edinborough Way, or at the club’s weekly 12:15 p.m. Thursday meeting at the Edina Country Club, 5100 Wooddale Ave.

The project is being spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Maple Grove. Rotarians are collecting sewing machines, fabric, thread, needles, scissors, buttons, yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks and other sewing, knitting and crocheting supplies.

The donated items will be shipped in October to be used in a sewing cooperative in Uganda. Each machine donated will help a family become financially independent.

“The sewing center project will impact the lives of women and their children who arrive in Uganda as economic, political or war refugees,” said Shelly Loberg, International Service Director for the Rotary Club of Edina. “These refugees have no way of supporting themselves or making a living, and these families end up homeless and hungry on the streets of Kampala and the surrounding area. Learning to sew and knit can liberate them.”

Donations are being accepted until Sunday, Sept. 17.
