The Rotary Clubs of Edina, Bloomington and Maple Grove, along with Rotary International District 5950, the Mary Kay Ash Foundation and I Heart Radio, will purchase a van for Cornerstone Advocacy Services.
Cornerstone was founded in 1983 to serve victims of domestic violence in south Hennepin County. The Bloomington-based agency has earned a reputation for innovative and effective programs for victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

Cornerstone has two vans that are 17 and 19 years old. They are no longer reliable, frequently in for repairs and not meeting the organization’s growing needs. In order to ensure families have access to safety and can achieve their identified goals, reliable transportation is a must. This ensures victims can get to the Cornerstone shelter, but also that they have access to the employment, education, housing or medical services they need. Public transportation leaves those Cornerstone serves vulnerable to being found by their abusers. Taxi far is deemed to be cost-prohibitive and not a reasonable option for ensuring services for children and youth.
Cornerstone plans to buy a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country minivan from Richfield Bloomington Honda for $21,000. The Mary Kay Ash Foundation and I Heart Radio will cover the majority of the costs. In all, the three Rotary clubs and District 5950 will pay $5,000 for the vehicle.
Rotary must provide “sweat equity” for the project, so the club has agreed to wash and vacuum the van at least 6 to 12 times per year. If you are interested in volunteering to be on the committee to wash and vacuum the van, contact Director of Community Service – Local Projects Joe Arends, 612-455-1126 or jarends@nabankco.com. Depending on the number of volunteers, each person may not need to take the responsibility more than once or twice a year.
