The program speaker at the Aug. 2 Rotary Club of Edina meeting was Steve Irving, a former jockey and now racing ambassador at Canterbury Park in Shakopee. His visit coincided with our club selling tickets to Rotary Race Day at Canterbury, to be held Aug. 10. The $10 tickets are still available, so don't hesitate to purchase one or two or more. All proceeds go to The Rotary Foundation's PolioPlus.
Two new members—Bridget Hallstrom and Afira Hasan—were officially inducted into the club by Past President Brad Hepp. Greg Yoch was sponsor to both new members.

Wade Thommen, a member of the Social Committee, gave us a recap of what the committee has planned for this Rotary year. First up is Rotary Day at Canterbury (see above) Aug. 10, lawn bowling Aug. 29 and the Walk to End Alzheimer's Sept. 15, followed by Fall Fireside Chats in October.
A "dance off" was held to find someone to move on to the talent portion of the 2018 Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala. Many Rotarians took part and danced their way into our hearts, if not into the finals.

The meeting was called to order by President John Flynn at 12:35 p.m.
Josh Sprague gave the invocation with two of his children leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Four-Way Test.
We had six guests at the meeting, announced by Steve Buettner:

Brad Hepp inducted two new members—Bridget Hallstrom and Afira Hasan—who were officially inducted into the club. They were sponsored by Greg Yoch.
Fred Sylvester gave us information about an upcoming event with the Edina Police Department, to hand out Deterra packets (used to safely dispose of unused drugs) at Night to Unite block parties on Aug. 7.
Wade Thommen gave us an update on all the activities the Social Committee puts on. A very long list of fun events so be sure to participate.

Twenty fellow Rotarians got up to show off their dance talent. We can be thankful there is time before the Gala to practice. Kip Peterson, Fundraiser co-chair, reminded us that the "Rotary's Got Talent" 2018 Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala is Sept. 29.
Nate Wenner introduced the speaker. Mark Irving is the Racing Ambassador at Canterbury Park, and a professional jockey. He started his career in England at age 16, won a race on one of the Queen's horses before moving to America. He told us about two upcoming events at Canterbury—Rotary Day at the Park and Royal Day (which is modeled after Royal Ascot in London). Canterbury holds events year round.
Mark loves speed so has also raced motorcycles and snowmobiles. He has had eight concussions during his career and his riding weight is 109–110 pounds. He brought two saddles and other equipment to show us. Matt Boockmeier and Gordy Lewis gave a demonstration on how to sit on the saddles. There are some things that you cannot un-see. All are invited to spend a day at Canterbury.
