We met our new Youth Exchange students, introduced by Terry Stevens, our co-Youth Exchange Officer for the year. Maya Somos is from Austria and Marina Revkina is from Russia. Welcome them to Minnesota by inviting them to go on outings with you and your family!
Jennifer Bennerotte gave us a tutorial on bidding in the Online Auction for the Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala "Rotary's Got Talent!" Joe Christensen had Rotarians introduce several guests. Dick Teegen introduced visiting Rotarian Bob Solis, CEO of Open Arms for Children, which operates in Komga, Eastern Cape, South Africa. There is currently a small international grant request to the 5950 District Grant Committee for the purchase and installation of commercial laundry equipment to be placed in a newly constructed laundry building.

There is a Club fundraising event on Oct. 20. It is a motorcycle/automobile tour along the river plus a BBQ. The fee will be $25 per wheel. Details to follow from Gerry Norton or check out the Online Auction item for the event.

Mike Kallas introduced our speaker, Laura Mulliken, who spoke about Sex Trafficking in Minnesota. Source MN Anti Trafficking works in the Whittier neighborhood in Minneapolis and empowers sex-trafficked victims to get out and not return to the past lifestyle. She spoke about what human trafficking is and explained that it’s the fastest growing criminal industry—over $150 billion per year. Sex trafficking in Minnesota is especially increased during sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, NCAA tournaments, and deer and fishing openers. Laura explained that we can solve this through education and prevention, providing supportive services and outreach, and addressing demand.
Jim Platt thanked the speaker, a donation to Memorial Blood Centers has been made in our speaker’s name and John Flynn reminded us that there is no meeting next week due to the annual Gala on Sept. 29!
