Steve Buettner introduced the Edina High Students visiting our club: Santigo Saldana and Juan Uride.John Flynn and Jean Morrison had the honor of presenting the Major Donor Award Level 1 to Tom Pirsch, a member since 1969. Also attending were two of Tom’s children—Nancy Pirsch Olson and Fritz Pirsch. Congratulations Tom on becoming a Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation.
Heather Edelson gave her classification talk. Her classification is Community Advocacy. Bob Stehlik introduced the speaker, Phil Hansen. He is the current CEO for the American Red Cross Minnesota Region. He is also a member of Minneapolis Rotary Club #9. He provided an overview of the services provided by the Red Cross. The Red Cross was chartered in 1881. The Minnesota Chapter has been around for 100 years. Their vision is: Turning Compassion in to Action to Build Safer More Resilient Communities. One in 435 people in the world is a Red Cross volunteer. One in 25 people in the world is helped by the Red Cross each year. Their services provide Disaster Relief, Biomedical, Preparedness, Health and Safety Services, International and service to the Armed Forces. In Minnesota alone they responded to 567 disasters in 2017.
In a three-month period starting in August, the Red Cross responded to Hurricane Harvey, a category 4 hurricane; Hurricane Irma, another category 4 storm; Hurricane Maria, also a category 4 hurricane; and Hurricane Nate, a category 1 storm; as well as the mass shooting in Las Vegas and wildfires in California. Hansen wrapped up the meeting with “How Can You Help?" He had a list, but the main thing we can do is GIVE BLOOD and financial support.
