Meatloaf was playing for lunch at ECC today!
Our meeting was opened by President John Flynn with inspirational videos by Frank Cardarelle and Harold Hanson. We also celebrated a special 50th anniversary as a member of Rotary for Tom Pirsch who joined Rotary April 22, 1969. Jean Morrison toasted Tom with very flattering words and said Tom lived by the Four Way Test. In honor of Tom’s achievement we all enjoyed a delicious cake for dessert. Also at this time eight other members were recognized for being 50+year Rotarians.

David Clynes introduced his two guests, Abdi Hirsi and Joe McDonald who is the new CEO at VEAP. Royce Pavelka’s guest was Tom Key. We were also visited by Gleason Glover (Mpls #9) and Maria (Roseville). Steve Buettner introduced visiting student Areth Ulog and Kenny Smith informed us about an upcoming service opportunity. Rick Carlson awarded a grant to Alzheimer Association of Minnesota.
President Flynn recognized the 2018 Rotarians of the Year. The awards go to: Kip Peterson, Jennifer Bennerottte and Jody Kern. Outstanding leaders and excellent examples of “Service above self.”
Our guest speaker was introduced by Joe Christensen. Jim Souhan is a sports columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune where he has worked since 1990. Jim thanked us for reading the newspaper, which drew some laughs. He entertained us with some Sid Hartman and Patrick Reusse stories as well as comments about the major sports teams in town. Jim also said the best assignment in sports writing is covering the Masters golf tournament. Jim also had a couple of interesting comments about sports today. He said that the relationship with players is not as intimate as it used to be with all the different media covering the teams and crowding the locker room. He also said that head injuries in football are “hurting” the game. The modern helmets give the illusion of safety and needs to be changed. Mary Swendsen thanked our guest.
